Dogs, you’ve got to love them. With their goofy grins, waggy tails and complete devotion it is easy to see why they are known as man’s best friend (well women’s too). No wonder it’s so difficult to to leave your canine companion at home when you want to go away. It’s good to know you don’t have to. The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa – Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire Dales

Originally built in the 17th century the 40-roomed The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa is surrounded by 33,000 acres of lush Yorkshire Dales countryside on the Bolton Abbey Estate. It belongs to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire who have maintained a classic style of draped curtains and rich colours in the old wing and contemporary design in the new.

You can expect  lots of charm and history that goes along with your stay. Activities available include fly fishing, horse racing and the opportunity to walk the three peaks. Looking for a more relaxing break then have a look at the spa with different packages on offer.

Woof Factor – For £10 per night you can bring your pooch along. There are a host of extras that they will lap up. Starting with a ‘Welcome Pack’ when they arrive consisting of a bowl, treats, a blanket for them to snuggle up in, a towel and some waste bags. If you really want to spoil them you can request a four-poster dog bed for £25. Highlights of the Hotel include a Dog Lounge and a selection of dog friendly walks on the estate. No need to worry about bad weather either as they can supply wellies, raincoats, umbrellas and even torches for an after dark explore. A complimentary ‘Pet Concierge’ means that if you want to have a little time to yourself too and enjoy the spa you can knowing that your dog will be safe and sound.

Trigony House Hotel & Garden Spa – Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

This hotel was originally a Scottish country manor and the nine rooms have been designed to show the unique heritage of the building. Outdoor space is abundant with its own gardens and four acres of woodland meaning plenty of walks available for you and your furry companion. Roxy the Golden Retriever, Kit the Miniature Dachshund and Lola the Yorkie Pug cross act as hosts to welcome humans and dogs alike when they arrive. Activities on offer include cycling, fishing, golf, horse riding and even a falconry experience.

Woof Factor: To bring your dog along will cost £9.50 per night but they will get their own passport so that the 5th time you visit Fido can stay for free. They get a free bed, towel, bowl and welcome pack of treats. Dogs are welcome throughout the hotel and grounds with maps available of dog friendly walks. Every morning your pup will have a tasty sausage for breakfast (providing the diet allows). Dog sitting is available although you may not need it as there are Dog Pampering and even Reiki services so you can both have a treatment at the same time.

Just outside London in the Hampshire Hills is this luxury 133-room 18th century manor set in 500 acres of picturesque grounds. Forty miles north of London, on the edge of the Chilterns is a 90 acre National Trust-owned Grade 1 listed Jacobean and Georgian house. The Scarlet is an adult only hotel but just because you cannot bring your kids doesn’t mean the same applies to your fur babies. Dogs are very much on the welcome list although only certain rooms will accommodate them so make sure you check before you book. There are 37 rooms in total with features such as free standing baths, walk-in showers,  sea views, private gardens, terraces or private rooftop sitting rooms  Relaxation is what this place is all about from finding your inner chi with tai chi classes or perfecting that downward dog through some yoga. Or maybe you just want to soak in the hot tub whilst looking at the soothing sea.

Woof factor: Bringing your pup along will cost £15 per night and bowls, blankets and waste bags are provided. Go for a stroll on the beach, play in the sea and then just relax. Aah.

Woof factor: When you arrive, there will be a welcome card for your special pooch along with bowls, toys, treats and an embroidered pet towel. Grooming and dog sitting services are available but will need to be booked in advance. Oh and worried that your dog will be jealous of that afternoon tea well you don’t have to be. At the Eggerton there is a special dog afternoon tea with a variety of dishes and a chew toy to take away. The afternoon tea is something that has to be paid for but the rest is included in your hotel booking price. Afternoon tea is £25 per dog and £40 per person. A treat for you both, although don’t mix up those plates by mistake.
