The official language is English and it is widely understood – however there are 73 tribes with 73 languages and an attempt at a local language will be very much appreciated and garner you some respect!

The most widely spoken language following English is Nyanja and the following is some of the most useful Nyanja phrases.

Good morning - Mwauka bwanji
Good afternoon - Mwachoma bwanji
How are you? - Muli bwanji
I am fine - Nili Bwino
Thank you - Zikomo
Yes -  Inde
No - Iyayi
I don’t need it - Si ni funa
How much does it cost? - Zingati?
