The public need to be careful of charges enforced on them by certain banks for using their cards abroad, it has been claimed.
Speaking to BBC Two's Working Lunch, Jemma Smith, head of PR for Payment Clearing Services has explained that people should re-check their contracts with banks to see whether they are liable to pay such charges.
Ms Smith said: "It clearly pays to shop around before you go on holiday."
"By and large there is a card out there which will suit the way you want to use it. It does make sense to do a little bit of homework before you go away," she added.
For those looking to find out whether they are to be charged, credit card details will be found in the summary box and debit card charges are recorded in the terms and conditions.
According to Apacs, the UK payments association, there were 309 million overseas transactions among people holidaying abroad last year.
