The Landmark Hotel, London

When deciding where to stay in the grand city of London, the choices are endless. For me the finest Grande Dames amongst London's foremost hotels, the Landmark Hotel, is one of the most desirable places to stay in the world.

The Landmark is housed in a subdued red-brick Victorian facade featuring a formal clock tower and row of uniform bay windows which gives no hint of its exotic interior. But once through its doors into the lobby I was struck by a fusion of stunning sophistication and a stylish historic Victorian ambiance created by the dramatic, palm-studded marble columns, glazed tile mosaics, oriental carpets, with cane and mahogany leather-upholstered furniture.

The Landmark embodies traditional values, and has a fascinating history dating from 1899. It was built as the last of the great railway hotels during the golden age of steam. The soaring eight story glass-roofed central atrium creates a unique focal point. Over 100 years ago, this was an uncovered courtyard used for horse-drawn carriages. It has now been transformed into the chic and relaxing Winter Garden Restaurant, where guests can enjoy a contenental and/or a full English breakfast, a traditional English lunch, and a hearty dinner. I suggest the Kettyle Beef, the Seared Fillet of Seabass, or the Gressingman Duck Breast, all are sensational. Afternoon tea is also served and I enjoyed delectable tasting finger sandwiches with traditional fillings of egg salad, chicken salad, cucumber and salmon, famous scones, authentic clotted Devonshire cream and organic strawberry preserve not to mention many scrumptious little cakes.

The Landmark has 299 luxurious, spacious guest rooms and suites. My room was the largest room that I have ever experienced in London. It was decorated with lavish traditional décor, exceptional attention to detail and furnished with a blend of old-world style and luxury. There were also, some lovely modern Chippendale pieces and original art. Plus, a cozy bed with soft quilted bedding that offered a great night's sleep.

All the rooms have the latest technology and air-conditioning, fax machines, multiple-line phones with voice mail, Internet access, interactive TVs, mini-bars, and elegant marble baths with dual basins. Large closets supply robes, safes, and scales, with housekeeping serviced twice-daily.

Being an exercise fanatic, I was delighted to be able to experience exquisite indulgence in the newly refurbished spa and health club. I had a great workout, treated myself to a swim, whirlpool, steam room, as well as a massage, beauty treatment and an afternoon in the beauty salon. Yes, I did spoil myself, but it was wonderful. One of my favorite memories of the Landmark was afternoon high tea and Champagne in the Winter Garden. Truly awesome, don’t miss it!
