If you want to go on a journey of a life-time and raise money for a Nepalese orphanage you might like to consider Angel Holidays started by BBC presenter Steve Carver.
The company takes travellers around ancient cities and cultures, into the heart of the jungle and trekking into the lower Himalaya (suitable for beginners), you can even fly around the summit of Mt Everest. From each tour group Angel Holidays donates from its profits, so there’s no need for the hassle of sponsorship.
It was started by Steve, presenter for the world-service and Radio Four, after he noticed the plight of the many orphans in Nepal whilst on secondment. He’s used his local knowledge and contacts to develop this unique journey – and takes travellers to meet the children they will be helping. ‘Travellers get a terrific welcome.’ he says.
‘It’s a journey holiday-makers will never forget.’ Steve continues. ‘Any age can come along: you just have to be reasonably fit. I’d describe our travellers as people who have a fascination with the world and want to do something positive.’
Angel Holidays is a small and friendly company and most of their staff are Nepalese, Steve also employs Nepalese women to work with the tour – something extremely rare in Nepal, as well as an ever-smiling Buddhist monk in the team.
‘It’s a novel idea,’ said Steve. ‘By taking part you are automatically making a contribution to the children and having a fantastic holiday. Money donated will be used to buy essential items such as rice, medical supplies and educational material.’
Around 30 travellers join each group – the next trip is in April next year and is just £975. Flights to join the tour start at around £550.
