If you’re considering taking the plunge and setting up your own travel agency business, there are many things to consider. Whether you’re going to be a completely independent travel agent or a franchisee, you will need a number of personal qualities in order to succeed. We’ll look at some of these in more detail below.
Starting your own business obviously requires a great deal of initiative, but you’ll need this quality in abundance to make a success of your travel agency business. As an independent or travel agency franchisee, you’ll need to be proactive in going out and finding customers, whether that’s through an optimised website or attending local networking meetings. If you don’t show initiative in terms of your marketing in the early stages of your business, you might find it difficult to get off the ground. If you’re a franchisee, you may be able to get help with your marketing from the franchise company.
The travel agency business is fiercely competitive. You’ll need to be tenacious in going out and finding clients for your new venture, as well as making sure you follow up on any enquiries you receive. If you’re from a sales background, you should already have a tenacious streak which will stand you in good stead for putting in the hours in order to get enough bookings to pay your bills each month.
Every new company takes time to find its feet, and in the travel agency business, things are no different. It’s highly unlikely your travel agency will be a great success from day one, but if you’re prepared to be patient and have plenty of tenacity and initiative, it won’t be long before things start to pick up for you.
You’ll also need a genuinely caring attitude to succeed as a travel agent. By going that extra step for your clients and making sure they get the right holiday for them, you’ll find they’re much more likely to become repeat customers, which obviously makes things easier for you when it comes to generating bookings. As part of caring about the holidays your customers end up with, you’ll also need to have good listening skills. None of your potential customers will be impressed if you try to push a more expensive holiday to them and aren’t listening to what they really want.
