Most European countries extend free medical treatment to fellow Europeans. An E111 is the document you need to prove entitlement.

The E111 is vital if you fall ill suddenly or have an accident while abroad.
Whereas before one E111 form was sufficient for an entire family, now each member needs their own form.But all forms issued before August 19 2004 are NO LONGER VALID. Even the E111 forms that are currently issued are only valid until the end of 2005.
From January 2006 the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaces the E111. Make sure you have one of these even if you take out Travel Insurance. In any case many travel insurance policies stipulate that you have one and offer incentives suach as waiving excess charges made for any claim (usually £50).
