Hotel Review: Chalet Marjorie, Les Gets, France

Treat yourself to a ski adventure, pampered by Chalet Marjorie’s delightful team of live-in staff.

by Sophie Ibbotson

Family-friendly Chalet Marjorie occupies a prime location in Les Gets, understandably one of the most popular ski resorts in the French Alps. A new addition to SkiWeekends’ portfolio, it is available for 3-, 4-, and 7-night stays in winter, and the accommodation can be booked for sole occupancy or shared use.

Who for

The flexible accommodation at Chalet Marjorie makes it a popular choice for families and groups of friends. Proximity to the ski slopes and other attractions means you can all do your own thing in the daytime and then come together in the evening. There’s plenty of space to spread out and relax, the board games and table football encourage healthy competition, and as it is a very sociable environment, you might well come away with new friends, too.

There are 13 bedrooms at Chalet Marjorie, each sleeping 2-4 guests. All rooms have en-suite facilities and have been recently refurbished in a laid-back style appropriate for an alpine chalet. The chalet is unusually well insulated, part of Ski Weekend’s commitment to environmental sustainability, so the rooms are not only warm but also quiet, ensuring a deep and peaceful night’s sleep in the comfortable beds. Alongside white linens and fluffy towels, rooms also come with large bathrobes so you can wrap up warmly for your dash outside to the hot tub, or laze about until dinner.

Food and drink

Breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner are included in every stay at Chalet Marjorie. The resident chefs turn out hot and cold breakfasts, magnificent homemade cake, and three-course evening meals, and they cater imaginatively to diverse dietary requirements, so no one misses out on the culinary experience.

The menu at Chalet Marjorie is always hearty and tasty, but guests wait impatiently for Saturday, as it is Savoyard speciality night. The Savoie department of France, which includes Les Gets, is famed for its meat and dairy products, as cows thrive in the lush mountain meadows. The local cuisine reflects the quality of these ingredients and is a response to the appetite you build up after an energetic day outdoors. The tartiflette (a mouthwatering oven bake of potatoes, cream, and bacon) is the pinnacle of Savoyard gastronomy, and goes particularly well with a carafe of Chalet Marjorie’s complimentary wine.

Facilities

Hot tub

When you come off the slopes, there is nothing better than a soak in a hot tub. Chalet Marjorie delivers with a large al fresco tub on the terrace, so you and up to nine friends can sit out beneath the stars whilst snowflakes fall around you. And if you have still not quite thawed out, the chalet also has a steam room, naturally fragrant from pine.

Skiers and snowboarders can keep their equipment in the chalet’s boot room. It has heating and drying facilities so no matter how soggy your salopettes at the end of the day, everything will be warm and dry in time for the next morning.

How much?

Rates at Chalet Marjorie are calculated per person and start from £460 for three nights half board, including airport transfers from Geneva.

What’s nearby?

Chalet Marjorie is five minutes’ walk from the main gondola station in the Alpine ski resort of Les Gets, giving you easy access to the Les Gets and Morzine sector of the Portes du Soleil ski area. Les Gets alone has more than 20 ski lifts and 25 slopes, most of which are blue and red, plus several ski touring trails.

Les Gets is a pretty town with plenty of lively bars and restaurants, a carousel in the main square, and a small museum dedicated to mechanical music. At Les Perrières, there is a high-speed, rail-mounted toboggan track – Les Gets’ answer to a roller coaster – which runs for 1,100 m and reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Alta Lumina

Alta Lumina c Alta Lumina

For something more sedate, the Alta Lumina is an enchanting illuminated night walk through the forest. Using lights, video projections, and music, it tells the story of a hot air balloonist and his magical adventures, delighting adults and children alike.

Verdict:  Les Gets is one of the most attractive ski resorts in the French Alps, and SkiWeekends’ flexible approach to arrival days means Chalet Marjorie is the ideal base for a short ski break.
