PLAY airline goes bust.

Low-cost Icelandic airline, PLAY, has shut down. The carrier, which started operations in 2021, announced that  “All flights have been cancelled. We are deeply sorry for the disruption this causes and thank you for your understanding.”

The last flight from Reykjavik to Stansted arrived on schedule at 10.40 am on Monday, with no return flight available. All other flights have been cancelled and grounded. Thousands of passengers have been stranded.

What do it if you are stranded

Look for an alternative way to travel as soon as you can. Often, other airlines offer “rescue fares” to passengers whose carrier has ceased operations.

Surprisingly, Icelandair says: “At this time, we are not offering special fares for PLAY passengers, but we are actively working to increase availability on routes previously operated by PLAY to better assist affected travellers.”

If you are in Baltimore and looking to return to the UK should head for New York and pick up a flight with British Airways and American Airlines. Check with your travel insurance if you are able to get a payout for the extra costs.

Refunds and passenger rights

If you purchased your ticket with a credit or debit card, contact your card issuer to arrange a refund. It’s usually a fuss free process.

If you booked your ticket as part of a package (flight + accommodation or services) through a travel agency in the EEA, get in touch with your travel agent, who is obliged to find alternative transport.
