Hotel Review: Belmond Reid’s Palace, Funchal, Madeira

by Sharon Ibbotson

Set in sub-tropical gardens, with a sublime view over the Atlantic Ocean, Belmond Reid’s Palace Hotel has for more than a century been the ultimate place for royalty, Hollywood stars, politicians, writers, and entertainers such as  Winston Churchill, Karl von Habsburg, and Roger Moore. Opened in 1891, the hotel has been refurbished and expanded over the years, finally being purchased by the Orient Express luxury hotel chain and propelled into the 21st century as a unique and stunning 5 star hotel.

Who for?

Affluent holidaymakers looking for luxury in a tranquil environment. The hotel is surprisingly family-friendly too, with a children’s pool, indoor play space, and a soundproofed technology room for the teens. The Reid’s Angels will take charge of entertaining your youngsters whilst you go out and explore.

Food and Drink

Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel: romantic dining

In the dazzlingly elegant Dining room, you’ll dine beneath twinkling chandeliers and amidst miniature palm trees. At the more contemporary William Restaurant, with its wrap-around windows and panoramic views of the sea and Funchal Bay, gourmet favourites have a new twist: we were served lobster and duck amuse bouche, followed by roast suckling pig, and a trio of deserts. The passion fruit brûlée was especially intense in its flavour, and the sommelier sensitively matched each dish with local Madeiran wines.

What’s Nearby

Take the lift or the stairs down to the foot of the cliff and secluded bathing terraces on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean or join a guided tour of the gardens. All the attractions of Funchal lie a 30 minute walk from the hotel, or you can take the hotel’s own bus. From the harbour, join a whale-watching tour, or explore the city’s iconic churches and museums. Wander the winding, narrow streets, or take the cable car up to Monte and its spectacular gardens.
