SpeedFerries aims at Eurotunnel

Cross-channel operator, SpeedFerries, opened its new terminal today at Dover Western Docks and outlined a range of initiatives for the business traveller in a bid to compete with the nearby tunnel.

The fast ferry terminal, known as Hoverport, aims to attract both freight and passenger traffic, but also the businessman wishing to make the crossing to Boulogne in 50 mins and avoid congested Calais.

“We have Premier Class vouchers, which offer fixed-price sailings during peak season, as well as a Premier Class lounge on board,” a SpeedFerries spokeswoman told ABTN. “From July onwards, we will also go live with a Premier Class [option when booking] with priority boarding and an upgraded Premier concept.”

SpeedFerries currently operates one fast ferry from Dover, but a condition of this potentially increasing to two, was moving to Hoverport. “We will introduce a second ferry on the route anytime from now until Easter next year, but this depends on the tonnage available,” added the spokeswoman.

The company is looking to add to its present 13% capacity, that sees its ferry carry 200 cars and 900 passengers on the short crossing. Facilities in Boulogne have also been improved with customers now able to park in front of the ferry and next to the terminal.

SpeedFerries is clearly training its sights on Eurotunnel in a bid to lure freight traffic away from the service. “Access to port facilities in both Dover and Boulogne connecting the M20 directly to the French A16 motorway will be efficient,” notes the spokeswoman, adding: “On a crossing of just 50 minutes, we will be able to beat even Eurotunnel on the travel time for most of France.”

Business travellers using SpeedFerries’ Premier Service, now have access to priority check-in and priority lanes, but this service will be upgraded in July.
