Prime Minister’s Holiday Time

Where will the candidates go after a hard month of campaigning? We have taken a look into our crystal beach ball.

Election fever has gripped the nation as Gordon, David and Nick jostle for position to take control of the country. After a month’s hard campaigning and the 6 May election result, the politicians will think about taking a ‘much needed’ break. We have taken a look into our crystal beach ball to anticipate where the political movers, losers and shakers might take their holiday(s) this year.

Surf and turf

Dave ‘The Dude’ Cameron has previously been spotted riding the rollers of South Africa’s Plettenburg Bay and with this year’s FIFA World Cup being hosted by the rainbow nation, self confessed Aston Villa fan David might well be thinking of joining everyone who’s gone surfing, surfing SA.

Five nights at The Table Bay Hotel in World Cup host city Cape Town with Virgin Holidays starts from £1,194, including scheduled flights with Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow direct to Cape Town, and daily breakfast. Prices are per person based on two adults sharing a standard room. Prices include all taxes and fuel surcharges which are subject to change.

Etihad Airways flies daily to surf mecca Cape Town with return fares from London starting at £603 in economy class, and £1,906 in business class; from Manchester, return fares in economy class start at £508, and in business class at £1,854. All fares include taxes and charges.

Going overboard on the Turkish Delight

Last year it was the ‘staycation’ and Torquay’s English Riveria, but prior to the barbecue summer and Britain’s bust economy, the Tory holiday of choice was more ‘playcation’ as Mr and Mrs Cameron cruised the salubrious sights and gorged on the gourmet foods of the Turkish Riviera aboard a yacht and alongside an armada of Gulet boats and 74 friends!

Time for change to David’s original itinerary? How about adding adventure with Exodus’ Gulet Activity Cruise, an eight day manifesto of action packed activities? Cruising in and around the coast of Kalkan and Ucagiz, the Tory-ist can explore the Kalkan hills by mountain bike, go canyoning in the mountainside or sea kayak along the beautiful Turkish Riviera before leaving Gordon green with envy as they retire to their Gulet. This eight day adventure starts from £799 and includes flights, onboard accommodation and all meals. Next departure 14 June 2010.

Seeing a reshuffle

For the politician seeking a reshuffle, the newly refurbished Club Med 4-Trident resort in Bodrum, Turkey could provide the perfect solution. Nestled amongst pine clad hillside on the shores of the Aegean Sea, guests can enjoy brand new contemporary Mediterranean décor, spacious rooms, fully redesigned restaurants and a newly designed beach. Within close proximity are the key areas of Ephesus, Pamukkale and Istanbul. A seven night break at the Club Med Bodrum resort starts from £886* per adult and £505* per child, including flights, all scheduled activities, dining and drinks, based on 10 June 2010 departures. *Prices are subject to terms and conditions.

Nomadic Nick

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, the son of a Dutch mother and half-Russian father, took travel to his heart growing up in the Netherlands fondly recalling days spent amongst German and Dutch holidaymakers in the West Frisian Islands.

The Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) represents over 40 cruise lines and has a variety of cruise holidays to the liberal land of the Netherlands. For the best itineraries visit

Democrat’s District

Nick also has a penchant for the Peak District which he describes as “one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Britain”

Priest House Hotel in Derbyshire is the ideal destination for aspiring premiers, with an alternative riverside setting to the famous building in Westminster – the River Trent. Originally a watermill mentioned in the Domesday book, this country retreat would lift the gloom surrounding any politician with its elegant contemporary decor, abundance of surrounding countryside and proximity to the Peak Distrcit. And for those pursuing pole position in a race of other sorts, Castle Donnington Racetrack is close by! A two night break starts from £126 per room.

Clegg it over to Castilla-Leon

Liberal love was found amongst the striking Spanish landscapes of Castilla-Leon where Nick Clegg conquered the heart of his wife Miriam. David Cameron is noted for his pride in pedalling to work, perhaps Nick can give him a run for his money as well as learning about his wife’s homeland on Exodus’ cycle into the Spanish heartland.

This eight night pedal adventure is more captivating countryside than crabby commuters as it traverses the Guardarrama mountain range to Valsain, before pushing on across breathtaking countryside to the historic city of Segovia with its narrow winding streets and beautiful architecture. Scenic cycling is plentiful as you cycle through backroads and ancient villages to Arcones and medieval Pedraza, before arriving in the picturesque town of Sepulveda and the nearby Duraton Canyon with its stunning views, nesting vultures and golden eagles.

This eight day trip starts from £899 and includes flights, accommodation and most meals, next departure 12 June 2010.

Ich bin Brown

Most folk like to dig holes on a beach, Gordon Brown infamously dug himself a large one in Berlin last year when he gave a rousing speech saying ‘If anyone had said 50 years ago that the people of our world would…tear down the Berlin Wall…no one would have believed it’, given that it wasn’t built until 1961, he’s probably right.

Brown could go Berlin bound to make amends for his gaffe by flying with BMI to Germany’s vibrant and cultural capital city which offers a fascinating dynamic between old and contemporary, where historical buildings, monuments and museums jostle for space alongside modern plazas, contemporary art galleries and gourmet restaurants, amidst a hub of year round cultural exhibitions and festivals. Return fares start from £99 return including taxes.

Fanz of Tanzania

Gordon Brown’s wife, Sarah, grew up in Tanzania and was said to have fired the current PMs imagination with stories of her childhood in Africa.

Another sure-fire way to ignite Gordon’s imagination and evoke memories for Sarah would be on Exodus’ ten day adventure to climb the Rongai route of Mount Kilimanjaro. Gordon is used to uphill struggles but never one so inspiring, this trek approaches the legendary mountain from the north and retains a sense of rugged, untouched wilderness lost on the crowded Marangu and Machame trails – a must for anyone who like to sit at the summit of a country. This ten day trip starts from £1,699 including flights, next departure 22 June 2010.

Home Sweet Home

Another journey Gordon might consider taking would be a trip to his homeland, Scotland. Having studied at Edinburgh University and worked in his early political career in the likes of Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath whilst growing up in the village of Insch, near Aberdeen, there are plenty of Scottish sights to re-visit.

For the politician in demand, the Norton House Hotel and Spa offers the tranquillity of the countryside with close connections to Edinburgh and its airport. This fabulous country house is set in 55 acres of glorious grounds with luxury bedrooms and suites, a three AA Rosette restaurant and arguably one of the best spas in Edinburgh - comprising of seven treatment rooms, a rasul, a relaxation room, indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, and a sauna and steam room – perfect for the put upon politician. A two night break starts from £240 per room.

And after his recent claim that the strike action of BA staff was ‘deplorable’, he’d be tempted to fly BMI who offer a range of daily flights from London Heathrow to Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with return prices starting from £76 and £109 respectively, including taxes.
