Three Summer Destinations

Want to jet off to sunnier climes?

Published 17 May 2012 in Featured Articles

When summer arrives, most of us feel the urge to jet off to a sunnier or warmer climate, to make the most of the season.

However, the usual tourist hotspots become overcrowded very quickly as package tours dump ever more travellers on their streets and beaches.

Instead, why not head away to somewhere a little different? Here are just three possibilities that you may have overlooked.

The Baltics
The Baltic region has plenty to offer, from the northern European countries of Scandinavia right through to Russia, Latvia and Lithuania.

In Iceland, you can witness volcanic landscapes the likes of which you are unlikely to have ever seen before, while at night there is the possibility of an aurora borealis display.

Tours of Eastern Europe such as those offered by the Baltic Travel Company can take in several countries - the company runs coach tours through Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, as well as neighbouring Russia and Poland.

Alternatively, head to Scandinavia by coach, train or on a fly-drive break, and enjoy some sightseeing in another of the world's most unique landscapes.

South Africa
South Africa is enjoying a resurgence as a holiday destination, and companies such as Cape Portfolios provide accommodation in Cape Town, around the area's vineyards, along the scenic Garden Route or even on nearby Mauritius.

These are holiday destinations for true sunseekers, although the Garden Route is famed for having a slightly milder climate than the rest of the country. Wherever you choose to stay, renting a villa is a good option to provide you with a base from which to explore, with a drive to Cape Town, a trip to the nearest beach, or a trek into the local countryside.

Honeymooners can relax in a lush and welcoming environment with plenty of natural beauty - complemented perfectly by a refreshing dip in your private pool, if your villa has one - while thrillseekers can choose instead to stay in a game lodge and see what wildlife they can spot in the surrounding reservation.

The Himalayas
For a physical challenge with deeply spiritual connections, consider a trip to the Himalayas, the planet's tallest mountain range and home to Mount Everest, the single tallest mountain of them all.

This is a summer holiday with a difference, as you experience everything the mountain range has to offer - from foothills swathed in tropical forests, to snow-capped peaks where the ice never melts.

Specialist travel operators like Shakti Tours can help you to explore the peaks safely - not only for your own safety, but also for the preservation and conservation of the mountains themselves.

The company has earned commendations in the past for its commitment to responsible travel in mountainous areas, and is one of several capable of running tours with minimal ecological or cultural impact.

Some of the holidays described above take you to places where summer can be enjoyed at its fullest ferocity, with sun-soaked beaches and ice-cream-melting temperatures, while others help you to escape the heat by heading for high altitudes - but all of them are bound to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
